The Society is self-funding and is involved in various fundraising events throughout the year. We are dependent on the generosity of the local community through these events and other donations. If you would like to make a donation or participate in a fundraising event please contact us.

The Chislehurst May Queen Society has a retinue of up to 24 children and is one of only a few groups performing traditional maypole dancing. The Crowning Ceremony is on the first Saturday of May on Chislehurst Common. In the following months, the May Queen, Prince and retinue attend various venues and events (such as care homes, school fairs and local festivals) where they perform a selection of maypole dances.

The May Queen and Prince work their way up through the retinue, increasing in seniority each year they are a member. The most senior child in the retinue has the choice of being the Queen or Prince.

The Chislehurst May Queen Society is run by a committee made up of the parents of past and current retinue members. The Chair of the Committee is Mrs Evelyn Gilbert and the President is Mrs Vera Quinn. The Society's patron is Sir Roger Sims JP.

How to join 

We are always looking for new members of the retinue. As part of the retinue the children enjoy learning how to perform traditional maypole dances; build their confidence to dance in public; work together as a team; and make friends with other children from their community.

The Retinue rehearses once per week from mid-February to May Day, with additional rehearsals immediately prior to the Crowning Ceremony. In addition to the Crowning Ceremony on the first Saturday in May, the children perform at several weekend events during May, June and July.

Children must be at least five years old on Crowning day to join the retinue although names can be added to the waiting list at any age! Priority is given to children who live in Chislehurst. If your son or daughter would like to join please send us your details using the contact us page here
