Ceramic workshops

Alhambra Tiling Project

As its name implies, the project is inspired by the intricate mathematical tiling that adorns the walls of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain.

We have devised a way of making ceramic tiles of this type, using portable, non-hazardous tools and materials, which we have toured round classrooms in south London as the centre-piece of workshops that explore a combination of geometry, technology and art. By this means, we have worked with hundreds of children to create thousands of tiles. With help from adult volunteers, the tiles are usually assembled and mounted as panels for display in the schools concerned, and we have also shown our work at exhibition venues such as London's City Hall and the Crystal Palace museum. In addition, we have worked with patients at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, and, most recently, with attendees of the Living Well Food-bank in Penge.

The costs of these ventures have largely been covered by grants, from the Arts Council, Awards for All and the GLA.
