So ....... Why Neuter Your Cat?

We all love our cats/kittens but there are far too many of them living in the UK today. So many, in fact, that animal welfare charities such as Cats Protection are dealing with ever increasing numbers of homeless, sick or ill treated cats. Here at Bromley Cats Protection it is our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless cats, and one way in which we can do this is to encourage and help cat owners to neuter their pets.

There are many reasons why you should get your cat neutered:

• An un-neutered female cat could have as many as 20,000 descendants in as little as five years
  
• Male tomcats are more likely to roam, fight and mark their territory (spray) in their search for female cats to mate with. This behaviour can spread life threatening diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV ) and Feline Leukaemia Virus (FelV).
  
• Un-neutered female cats call/wail when coming into season, and like a male will wander looking for a mate
  
• As well as exposing cats to FIV/FelV, mating can lead to fighting & biting injuries and therefore additional vet bills
  
• Neutered cats tend to be more homely and less likely to wander
  
• The cost of feeding, vaccinating and homing an unwanted litter of kittens far exceeds the cost of neutering the female cat in the first instance
  

Birth is a dangerous time for the mother, and tiny kittens are particularly vulnerable to illness. If the worst happened, the associated vets bill could be extremely expensive.

How much does it cost?

The cost of neutering will vary depending on which vet you intend to use but, on average, our experience is that a male can cost £60 - £100 and a female £90 - £130.

When should I get my cat neutered?

We recommend neutering your cat at between 20 and 24 weeks of age but it can be done a little earlier if necessary.
