FREE Gentle Sport & Games Sessions, dementia-friendly - Every other TUESDAY

Symbiosia

WHO FOR?

  • Anyone aged 70+
  • People living with dementia
  • Family caregivers (any age), with or without the person they support

The sessions provide light physical activity and relaxed social connection in a supportive outdoor setting. They are adapted to the mixed ability levels of the participants attending on the day.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SESSION?

Whilst each 1.5 hour session is unique, it broadly follows this flow:

  • Welcome & Registration
  • Warm-up
  • Sport / Game
  • Break
  • Sport / Game
  • Wind-down
  • Refreshments & Chat

Chairs are available for those who need seated participation. Participants do need to be able to independently access the grass field. The sessions take place next to the Beccehamian Rugby Club clubhouse, which conveniently offers free parking and is close to the 119 Courtfield Rise bus stop.

WHO MAY BENEFIT?

The sessions are designed for those who would benefit from:

  • Increased confidence to be active outdoors
  • Gentle improvement in mobility
  • Social interaction
  • Low-pressure physical activity
  • Stress reduction linked to caregiver burden
  • Meaningful shared activity for caregiver and cared-for

In poor or very hot weather, the sessions will move into the rugby clubhouse, which also offers toilet and changing facilities during the sessions.

These sessions may particularly suit those experiencing:

  • Loneliness or social withdrawal
  • Reduced physical confidence
  • Mild mobility decline
  • Caregiver strain
  • Low mood linked to inactivity or isolation
  • Early to moderate dementia where mainstream sport groups feel unsuitable
  • Reduced vision
