Roundabout (An introduction to music and learning to play in a group setting)

Bromley Youth Music Trust

ROUNDABOUT is a diverse programme for primary school children encompassing a variety of wind, brass and percussion instruments. Students have the opportunity to explore instruments such as the Ocarina (a small wind instrument), Glockenspiel, Ukulele, Djembe Drums and Steel Pan, as well as wind and brass instruments in our wind groups.

The age ranges below are intended as a guide as the programme builds on musical experience. If you are uncertain which group would be the best fit, please contact the office or email sheree@bymt.co.uk.

At BYMT Anerley (based at James Dixon Primary School):

Roundabout 1:

Primary school children at the beginning of their musical journey (aged 6 to 7) can join Roundabout 1. The morning is split into three sessions where you will learn about and how to play Djembe Drums, Steel Pan and the Glockenspiel and Ocarina as part of the 'Glocks & Ocks Band'. These sessions help to develop musical awareness, pitch and rhythm.

Roundabout 2:

Building on the skills learnt in Roundabout 1, primary school children (aged 7 to 10) can then join Roundabout 2. Split over three sessions, Roundabout 2 continues with the Steel Pans, as well as introducing Ukulele, and exploring and learning different wind or brass instruments in group sessions. Roundabout 2 furthers the musicianship skills learnt in Roundabout 1 as well as starting to read music and notation.
