Courses

Interested in taking up beekeeping, or just wondering what is involved?

This introductory day is for you! It starts with a morning theory session  via a Zoom workshop/ presentation giving a brief overview of the natural history of bees, touching on other bee species and the unique aspects of honeybees, their life cycles, what beekeepers should do to help keep healthy bees and be good neighbours.

A practical session will also be offered on a Saturday afternoon in the Orpington Apiary located next to the Beeche Centre, High Elms Country Park.

In both the theory morning and practical session participants will be guided by experienced local beekeepers. Practical activities will involve examining the hives and doing necessary seasonal beekeeping tasks. Participants will be lent a protective jacket and gloves and shown how to light and use a smoker, how to handle frames of bees

and to identify the different bees in the hive, the brood stages and pollen and honey stores. Each will have the opportunity to handle frames of bees. Visit http://www.orpingtonbeekeepers.org.uk/courses/ for dates and further details.
