National charity Re-engage is inviting people aged 75 and over who are lonely or in need of companionship to join a tea party group in Bromley. The free, monthly tea parties are usually on a Sunday afternoon, giving older guests the chance to enjoy warm, friendly chats and a change of scenery over tea and cake. These social events make a big difference to the lives of those attending their local group, including Peggy, 81:

“You have no idea what it means to me. I'm beginning to feel human again. For a small group of people to meet in someone's home, it makes me feel as if I belong to a family.”

The Bromley tea party group formed back in 1975 and has been running these monthly events ever since. Tea party groups vary in size and usually take place in the home of one of the volunteer hosts. They all provide a lifeline of friendship for older people in the community.

Tea parties are run by a group of dedicated volunteers, including a coordinator, hosts, and drivers who take the guests to and from the venue. Drivers also stay to chat to guests, assist the host and help to eat the afternoon tea, of course. Tim, 40, gets a lot out of being a volunteer driver for his local tea party group in Watford:

“I get a lot out of volunteering because it’s quite something to see the smiles on the faces of our guests when they get together to talk and eat nice food. I feel like I’ve achieved something -and it’s better than just sitting around playing video games.”
